A panel discussion exploring how fashion can embrace sustainability by incorporating, from the design stage onward, the right to reparability and the realities of the secondhand market.

At a time when technology companies are facing criticism for limiting repairability (sealed products, planned obsolescence), this project aims to apply these issues to the fashion industry:

‍

• Why aren't clothes designed to be easily repaired?

• How can we make it easier for them to be resold?

• What would be the standards for a truly sustainable garment?

‍

The panel will address: modular design (interchangeable buttons, removable parts); techniques and finishes that facilitate alterations; the economic and cultural implications of the secondhand market; designers’ responsibility regarding the lifespan of clothing; and a discussion of the “right to repair” as it applies to fashion. The initiative aims to reposition repair as a central aspect of design, rather than as a last resort.
